NYC Chef David Chang On His Food Philosophy

The philosophy you have when you’re cooking? Did I hear that right? Yes, Chef Chang is talking about a philosophy that is related to a particular action. It happens to be an action that he most likely loves. It likely keeps him endlessly curious with all the different possibilities there are when it comes to cooking up something new.

He talks about imitating cooking from another country and missing the point of why you are cooking in the first place. Tell me you listen to him talk about that, and your imagination didn’t get running off to the races. If you tell me that, I know you’re lying.

This opens up an entirely new way of thinking about philosophy. Don’t arrive at what your framework is that you push everything through. Instead, start doing something and ask yourself how you are approaching it. Answer the question about how you cook up a meal. Get that answer and find out if you approach other tasks the same way.
